Homemade lemonade
My grandparents’ house in Portugal is blessed with an overflowing lemon tree - what a better way to use them than to make some homemade lemonade…!
Note: when making lemonade, it takes a lot of adjustment because lemons vary a fair amount depending on where you live. I know the ratio of lemon juice to water to sugar for these lemons, so use this as a starting point and then adjust based on how you like it. If your lemons are a little more bitter then add some more sugar or use less lemon juice (saves you having to dilute it with more water if you want to keep the quantity of liquid fixed). I aim for a 1:1:4 ratio lemon juice, sugar, water. Adjust as necessary!
Here’s how I make this lemonade:
- 100ml lemon juice
- 100g white sugar
- 200ml + 200ml water
1. Dissolve the sugar in 200ml water. Microwave until warm enough to dissolve the liquid (takes about 45secs/1min). Set aside either in the fridge or freezer to chill.
2. Juice the lemons.
3. Add the lemon juice, sugar water and the remaining 200ml water into a big jug. Stir and adjust taste as necessary! Add ice cubes and mint leaves if desired.
Top tip: if you like it fizzy, swap half the plain water for sparkling water.
A Bite Out of Life
If you follow my Instagram, you’ll know I LOVE an opinion poll. I’m constantly figuring out what side of the fence my followers sit on with various food-related topics… Sometimes some of them will be a fairly even split, but if there was one that recently united my following, it was this one. Eating a pizza: my cousin, as I found out recently, prefers to eat the crust first because then you only eat the ‘good’ bits last, so every bite after the crust is over is a good one. Now, don’t get me wrong… in principle, it’s smart. But never have I seen such an overwhelming majority of people in my Instagram rebel against this idea. People were FUMING. And quite frankly… I agree (even though I do see the logic). Don’t knock it until you try it, according to my cousin… but I don’t think I’ll be giving this a go just yet… we’ll see.
