Accidentally Vegan
When you first go vegan, it can be quite daunting feeling like you’re about to lose loads of handy pre-made products: cooking sauces, snacks, baking supplies, breakfast cereals etc. But this need not be the case! The following lists are by no means exhaustive – this doesn’t cover all products that are accidentally vegan so the only way is up from here, really.
Always read the label, in particular if you are an allergen sufferer. Many of the items listed below are classed as ‘vegan’ based on their active ingredients, however this does not take into account the possibility of potential cross-contamination during their production. None of the below have any meat or animal derivatives as active ingredients but they ‘may contain’ allergens.
Cereals
You may see many cereals that have no animal derivatives as active ingredients (at first sight) and wonder: why isn’t this vegan? Well, firstly the product may be made in a factory where animal derivatives are used to make other products and so the company is unable to ensure that the product at hand is 100% free from cross contamination of other allergens. Secondly, vitamin D is commonly used to fortify breakfast cereals. There are two types of vitamin D that make it into cereal, these being Vitamin D2 and D3. Vitamin D2 is derived from plants however D3 is derived from lanolin, which is the grease naturally found on the wool of sheep. Lanolin is extracted from their wool after shearing, so they are not killed for their wool and it has nothing to do with their meat (so is suitable for vegetarians). If the vitamin D coming from lanolin doesn’t bother you, it opens up an even bigger cereal world, so it’s down to you where you stand on it. The following, however, are all vegan:
